Francois Kevorkian

Francois Kevorkian, Francois K, or FK, is a man who helped to define what dance music is, having been an active member of the scene from the heady days of disco. FK has seen it all and done it all.

Francois is a Frenchman who moved to New York in the mid 1970s searching for bigger things. A music man through and through, he initially hoped to find work as a drummer, but New York was such a hotbed of immense talent at the time that the newcomer found DJ-ing to be a better path for him to find work in. He quickly rose to prominence and before long he was working for Prelude Records, where he began his work as a remixer/producer.

With strong connections to Studio 54 and The Paradise Garage, FK was right in the heart of the New York dance music scene. He remixed some of the best and most celebrated tracks from the era, including Sparque's "Let's Go Dancing" which he worked on with Larry Levan and Dinosaur L's "Go Bang" (Arthur Russell). When the disco era came to an end he began working with some of the brightest musical talents of the day, remixing Yazoo's "Situation", "This Charming Man" by The Smiths and other releases for household names as diverse as Kraftwerk, Ashford & Simpson, The Cure and U2.

Francois also continued to work as a DJ, including a tour with his friend Larry Levan in 1992. He set up his label Wave Music in 1995 which released some amazing house records such as the FK EP and Time & Space. Francois is also part of the Body & Soul collective, alongside fellow US DJs and artists Danny Krivit and Joe Claussell.

In more recent years, post 2000, Francois has diversified into areas such as techno and dub reggae, while keeping a keen eye on his roots in house music and disco. His night Deep Space NYC has received critical acclaim and he has worked with dub legend U Roy on this. At the same time, he has maintained his status as a producer and remixer of the highest order.

Francois is an advocate of embracing the future and using the technology which is available, as such he was an early adopter of the digital format for DJ-ing

Jose Padilla - Essential Mix - Cafe Del Mar - September 1995

Outstanding Essential Mix here from Jose Padilla, of Cafe Del Mar fame, from 1995. Originally broadcast on 10th September, this is a set which got a lot of airtime back then. Super music from a pioneer of chillout. Soaring sounds, ambience, breaks, soul/funk, house, deep techno....it's all there in this timeless Dj set.....including Robert Miles' Children track, which became a massive hit soon after this was broadcast.

Jose Padilla began his residency at the Cafe Del Mar in 1991. Around that same time, artists like The Orb, FSOL and Banco De Gaia were becoming established and there was a strong ambient/rave/house/techno movement there for people to get lost in - the seeds were being well and truly sown.

Jose Padilla's Cafe Del Mar series was very much part of the mix in this underground music revolution; people would go out, party, do what they do, come home and wind down to Jose's relaxed sound, dreaming of Ibiza. Heavenly stuff!

So, for the beats, including a tasty and recent Balearic house set from Jose who is wearing a cooler than cool t-shirt.....

Eat Static - New Album - Dead Planet/Human Upgrade

Hot and excellent new music here from Eat Static who has just released a brand new double album, Dead Planet/Human Upgrade. One half is for dancing and the other is for being pinned back in the armchair and teleported to another world. Eat Static's music goes that little bit deeper than most, a true artist with the vision and skills to create magic in the music. This is the first studio album from Eat Static since 2008 and is super heavy on the rich warm sound of analogue.

Steve Hillage of Gong, System 7 and Robert Smith of The Cure all feature on the album so genuine quality at work here. You can buy the album at Eat Static's bandcamp page for the bargain price of just £10.

For further information about Eat Static, there is another post on Adventures In Rhythm to check out earlier music here, and you can visit the Eat Static website here

Plastic Robots - Zero Day Mix

Plastic Robots, from Santa Catarina, Brazil, are a tech house/techno/electro duo making waves on soundcloud at the moment with their latest Dj set, the Zero Day Mix. They have a really cool sound, lots of tech house influences - quite stripped down, bouncing basslines and a splash of darkness, but they also have a distinctive electro sound as well, which is nicely tempered by the house.

The bass sound Plastic Robots play in some tracks is along a similar line to Dash Vinci's music, who featured on Adventures In Rhythm earlier in July. Dash is also from Brazil, and there is something new and fresh about his sound too, so Brazil has become a hotbed of talent for this music with their own way of doing things.

Plastic Robots is a great name and they have 10s of thousands of followers so all the ingredients are there for them to really go places

John Lee Hooker

John Lee Hooker, originally from Mississippi, is one of the most well known and loved of the bluesmen. Something about the way he delivers his music stops you in your tracks and makes you realise you are in the presence of something very real. He is an advocate of blues being about human feeling, music as a form of true expression of the soul. The performance below with the brilliant Ry Cooder is a real moment of history and a great recording, a must watch

Joey Negro

Joey Negro, Dave "Love" Lee, Akabu, Jakatta.....these are household names in dance music and yet they all belong to the talents of one man - Dave Lee. It's hard to figure out where he gets the time from as he seems to be constantly releasing new music, often backed by a full band, playing all over the shop at clubs and festival events (as a Dj, as part of the The Sunburst Band.....), releasing superb and extensive compilation albums, then releasing whole albums of new material with various other projects he has going, running record labels, his own nights and events....and the quality is always right up there.

His sound is often disco and funk based but he's not averse to delving into deeper waters when the mood takes him and it really is impossible to sum him up or categorise, but house and disco music is a constant theme.

Currently Joey is holding down a residency at Space in Ibiza, with Glitterbox, and recently played a set for them at the Ministry of Sound, London's world renowned nightclub venue. Meanwhile a steady flow of new material from Joey and other amazing artists like Soulmagic and Opolopo is always being updated via his label Z Records

Nathan Coles

As joint curator at OG tech house institution Wiggle, Nathan Coles has been there from the very start. Nathan's sound is what this music is all about - dancing. He creates and plays bass heavy, funky and sometimes dark house/techno with a cheeky smile on its face.....proper nightclub music. Some of his beats can even make you laugh with the playfulness, funny breaks, sample techniques and bass drops, making his sound very distinctive.

The Wiggle parties and label have been doing things the right way for two decades and are still going strong. Nathan is just about to headline Eden in Ibiza so it looks like he is rightly going to keep scaling up through the dizzy heights of music for a long time to come.

When he's not creating musical revolutions, running London's most cutting edge house nights or signing quality talent to his label, Nathan also has a property company based in Ibiza, called Love Ibiza Villas. If you want to do Ibiza in style, Nathan Coles is your man!

Here are some top quality dj sets to enjoy, productions and collaborations, plus an interview where he tells his story in his own words. Essential!

Blind Blake - Early Dance Music

A very important yet not too well known cog in the wheel of music is Blind "Arthur" Blake, the virtuoso American ragtime and blues fingerpicker who recorded some of the most advanced guitar music in history. He is in a league of his own for both originality and skill and Blake's music has influenced many musicians and artists. Blake played fast, intricate runs with moving basslines and a playful style, all while singing his often funny lyrics. There really is no-one to compare him to.

Details about Blake's life are sketchy, but he is thought to have lived from 1896 to 1934. He recorded around 80 songs between 1926 and 1932 and we are very lucky to have so many recordings of his music. Blake's music was the dance music of its time
