The Happy Mondays

Arguably Manchester's greatest ever band (alongside The Stone Roses and The Charlatans), the Happy Mondays pressed so many of the right buttons. They emerged from nightclub culture in the heady days of the legendary Hacienda club. Ecstasy was landing on British shores and the Mondays were like musical messengers who knew how to translate this new dawn into a musical form. Shaun Ryder's lyrics were funny and clever, they had style, they had great tunes, they had great musicians, they had bongos, they had a female vocalist to balance Shaun's drone, they partied and they put out lots and lots of amazing music. They worked with great producers too and a lot of credit should go to people like Steve Osborne and Paul Oakenfold who took the music to higher levels with their knowledge laden productions of Mondays' tracks
