Best DJ ever on the best sound system ever at the best club ever - Larry Levan @ The Paradise Garage
Larry Levan was the New York disco DJ they all queued up see. The sound he made at the Paradise Garage has never been matched and the echoes from the Garage are still reverberating around Planet Earth to this day. This man played the best dance records ever, on the best sound system ever (the legendary Richard Long sound system), all in the right order. He told stories, he spoke to individuals on the floor with his music and he rocked the house. He was an integral link in the development of house and garage music (the term "garage music" refers to the Paradise Garage). He was also a great producer and remixer. Sometimes the stars align, the waters part and a train rides through town which stops everyone in their tracks; Larry Levan was one of these people. He was integral to the design of the club and the configuration of the sound system. In an interview I heard him say something about the reason people come to see him is because his life is like a soap opera and they turn up to see what mood he is in, what he's going to do next. He was more than just some DJ. Listening to him talk you can hear a very engaged and focused man who was truly on top of his game and knew his craft inside out, a lesson for us all. Here is a section of Larry playing at the second anniversary of the Garage in 1979. The crowd must have been going crazy as Larry drops tune after tune of pure foot shaking gold. He takes them up, he takes them down, then he takes them right back up again. A master at work, this is pure magic!
